Feb 18, 2003

Dawn the next morning, with the full moon still visible over our tent. Our kerosene lamps were re-lit and we had hot water for a good shower.

You can see in the back of the tent where the attached “shower tent” is. There is also a separate little tent with a chemical toilet in it. That’s where I was the night before this picture was taken, at 2 AM, tinkling, when I heard the lion roaring. Yep, softly roaring, and it sure sounded as if it was incredibly close!

The next morning, we all shared stories of having heard the lions roaring to each other in camp the night before. The first thing we did as we drove out of camp was try to find these noisy felines. We weren’t 100 yards from camp when we found them.

This was a mating pair of lions. They mate for about 4 days in a row, and they stay in one place, so they were going to be our neighbors for a while.

Okay, we snapped lots o’ lion mating shots. What can I say? They mate every 15 minutes, so if you stay long enough, you can get all sorts of angles on the “deed”.

She would roll over and loll around, and they would growl at each other softly.  The male lion would lazily snap at flies that flew by his nose, and then 20 minutes later they’d be up and at it again.

We headed out to from Naabi Hill to the Gol Kopjes (rock formations), and it was the day of the lions!  Lion after lion after lion! And we never got tired of seeing them. Here’s a gallery of lion pictures!
